Drug Abuse Prevention

Training & Capacity Building:
The Institute runs a number of programmes and training courses, tailored for specific target groups by adopting three-pronged approaches:
(i) Three-Month Certificate Course on Drug de-addiction treatment, Counseling & Rehabilitation: The course has been designed to build the knowledge base of service providers including Counsellors, Social Workers, Outreach Workers of treatment centers. The course includes interactive theoretical sessions and one week field placement in reputed treatment centers. The broad contents of the course are – Basics of Addiction, Motivation and Counselling, Community Based interventions, Outreach and Awareness Creation.
ii) Fifteen-Day Certificate Course on Drug Abuse Prevention by the National Institute of Social Defence and State level Coordinating Agencies (SLACs).
iii) Five-Day Training Course on Drug Abuse Prevention by the National Institute of Social Defence and State level Coordinating Agencies (SLACs).

Thematic Skill Building Programmes:
Under this category, the following two to five days’ programmes are undertaken:
• Substance Addiction Identification, Initial Motivation and Early Intervention: To orient service providers on symptomatic behaviour, early identification and early warning signs in order to equip them with requisite techniques for early intervention.
• Counselling for Addiction (Individual, Family and Group): To train counsellors working in the areas of substance demand reduction so as to expand their knowledge base and sharpen their individual, group and family counselling skills.
• Preventive Interventions for High-Risk Groups: To sensitise service providers working with high-risk groups such as truckers, commercial sex-workers, etc., on issues pertaining to Behavioural Change Communication (BCC).
• Research, Rapid Assessment & Monitoring of Substance Abuse: On the relevance, scope and contents of research, rapid assessment and monitoring of substance abuse to obtain evidence for planning strategic interventions.
• Management of Co-dependency and Family Issues: To enable Counsellors/ Social Workers to deal effectively with significant others including family and co-dependents of addicts.
• Rehabilitation and Relapse Prevention – Issues & Modalities: For service providers for development and implementation of rehabilitation and relapse prevention programmes.
• Prevention and Management of Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS: To orient and expose the service providers to the area of HIV/AIDS prevention among substance users.
• Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention at Workplace: To sensitize Labour Welfare Officers of Corporate houses and Project Officers/Senior Counsellors of Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Centres working with the organizations/ enterprises/industries.
• A Learning Pack for Youth Coordinators: Designed for youth coordinators of National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) on alcohol and substance abuse prevention
• Treatment and Rehabilitation of Substance Addicts in Prisons/ Correctional Settings: To sensitize and empower middle level functionaries working in prisons/correctional settings on alcohol and substance abuse prevention issues.
• Documentation for Addiction Management-Assessment, Client Profiling, Recording and Documentation: To ensure proper recording and documentation of programme activities.
• Management Development Programme (MDP): To provide basic skills and understanding of the programme activities being carried out by Treatment-cum-Rehabilitation Centres.
• Orientation Course based on TNA (Training Needs Assessment): On the selected thematic issues relating to treatment based on needs assessment in operational areas of SLCAs.

Strategic Consultations
The Institute also organises strategic consultations with various stakeholders to evolve strategies for convergent action so as to bring synergy in ongoing programmes with different partners.
The Institute also holds Annual Consultative Meets with the State level Coordinating Agencies (SLACs) located in different parts of the country which serve as regional extension centres. This consultative meet is organised every year to plan out the activities of NCDAP and SLACs for strategizing key interventions based on emerging trends, evidence and experience gained at the operational level.

Old Age Care

Training & Capacity Building:
The long-term, short-term and thematic-based courses that are presently being carried out by NISD/collaborating organisations are:

1. PG Diploma in Integrated Geriatric Care
Target Group: An individual having graduation and above educational qualification and interested in working in this field.

Aims and Objectives:
• Develop a cadre of frontline skilled/trained personnel of geriatric care
• Provide a comprehensive and scientific knowledge base on various aspects relating to the geriatric care
• Develop an appropriate aptitude and skill for working with older persons

The course curriculum broadly includes:
• Gerontology
• Public Policy and Planning
• Clinical Geriatrics
• Geriatric Management
• Psychology and Counselling
• Research Methodology

Academic inputs include:

2. Certificate Courses in Geriatric Care
(i) Three-Month Basic Course for Caregivers /Bed Assistants
Target Group: Any individual having passed 10th standard, having a desire to serve senior citizens.
Aims & Objectives:
• Create a cadre of caregivers in bed-care assistance, etc
• Provide palliative care services, emergency and crisis-management
Course Curriculum includes:
• Introduction to NISD
• Body system, functions & related problems in Elderly
• Mental Health Issues Concerns in Elderly
• Communication
• Infection Prevention & Control
• Nutrition
• Positions, Use of comfort devices and Assistive Devices
• Caring Procedures
Practical training inputs include:
• Field Visits in Old Age Homes/Age Care Institutions for exposure
• Short term Placement in Government Hospitals

Desirable: Preference will be given to the candidates having certificates / experience(s)/training of working in (Home setting, Hospital, Age Care Institutions, Nursing home, NGOs)

Selection Criterion: The suitable candidates should be selected through personal interviews. The final selections are based on the interest to work for the care of senior citizens, qualification, age criteria, valid aadhaar card & verifications of original documents.
3. One-month advance course on Palliative Caregivers and One-month advance course on Dementia Caregivers & Stress Management – In process
Target Group:
NGO functionaries and service providers
Aims & Objectives:
• Build a comprehensive knowledge base on basic issues in geriatric care
• Enhance their skill and capacities in counselling and management of age care institutions
• Expose to various situations and innovative approaches in the field of ageing
• Enhance their knowledge in resource management, advocacy and networking
Course curriculum includes:
• Socio-Demographic Dynamics

• Develop and enhance the basic skills in Geriatric Counselling of the key functionaries of different NGOs.
• Enable the participants understand the various psychological factors related to ageing.
• Orient the participants with various approaches in Counselling for the care of older persons.
• Give practical exposure of specialized intervention strategies while caring for the aged.
• Create awareness about dementia and its various types

Officials of concerned State Social Welfare Departments, Probation Officers, Middle-level Police functionaries of State Police Departments, Lecturers, Readers and Field work Supervisors of Social Work Institutions, concerned NGO functionaries, Social Workers, Panchayat functionaries and Research Scholars.

The following Training and Capacity-Building Programmes are conducted:
• A comprehensive one-month certificate course on Social Defence issues is organised for the Govt./NGO and Panchayat functionaries.
• Three-day training programme for govt./ngo/panchayat functionaries on social defence issues.
• Three-day training programme for the functionaries of police dept. on social defence issues.
• Three-day regional level training programmes on social defence issues for social work educators.
• Five-day training programme on counselling for stakeholders in the field of social defence.
