Introduction
In observance of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2025, the Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC), Mission Foundation Movement (MFM), organized a One-Day Workshop on “Digital Literacy among Senior Citizens” on 1st October 2025 at MFM Hall, Durtlang Leitan, Aizawl, Mizoram. The programme aimed to enhance the digital knowledge and skills of senior citizens and promote their inclusion in an increasingly digital society.
Objectives
The workshop was organized with the following objectives:
• To create awareness on the importance of digital literacy among senior citizens.
• To familiarize participants with the use of smartphones and digital applications.
• To promote safe and responsible use of digital technology.
• To encourage senior citizens to access digital services independently, including healthcare, banking, and communication services.
Participants
The programme witnessed the participation of senior citizens from various localities in and around Aizawl, along with representatives from senior citizens’ associations, volunteers, and staff of Mission Foundation Movement.
Proceedings
The programme commenced with an inaugural session and welcome address delivered by the organizers. The significance of celebrating the International Day of Older Persons and the importance of digital inclusion for older persons were highlighted.
Technical sessions were conducted by resource persons with expertise in information technology and digital services. The sessions covered the following topics:
• Introduction to Digital Literacy and its Importance for Senior Citizens.
• Basic Smartphone Operations and Internet Usage.
• Digital Communication through WhatsApp and Video Calls.
• Online Banking and Digital Payment Systems.
• Accessing Government Services and Health Information Online.
• Cyber Safety, Fraud Prevention, and Responsible Use of Social Media.
Hands-on demonstrations and interactive discussions enabled participants to practice the use of smartphones and various digital applications. Participants actively engaged in the sessions and sought clarification on issues related to online transactions and cyber security.
Outcome
The workshop successfully enhanced awareness and confidence among senior citizens in using digital technologies. Participants gained practical knowledge on accessing digital services and recognized the importance of staying connected in the digital age. The programme also contributed to reducing the digital divide and promoting active and independent ageing.
Conclusion
The One-Day Workshop on Digital Literacy among Senior Citizens, organized by RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement, in celebration of the International Day of Older Persons 2025, was successfully conducted. The programme served as an important initiative in empowering older persons with essential digital skills and promoting their social inclusion and well-being. Participants expressed appreciation for the practical nature of the training and recommended that similar programmes be organized regularly to enable senior citizens to keep pace with technological advancements.
